This book commemorates two ‘titans’ of 20th century book design, Giovanni Mardersteig and Jan Tschichold. Hans Schmoller tells the story of two men who from obscure beginnings rose to become influential typographers of the 20th century, Tschichold as chief designer at Penguin Books and Mardersteig as founder of the Officina Bodoni. Illustrated with 30 examples of their work, this book has been printed at the Stamperia Valdonega, Verona, by Martino, Mardersteig’s son. The late Hans Schmoller was a well-known book designer and followed Tschichold as chief designer at Penguin Books. This book was prepared for press by Abe Lerner.

Hans Schmoller (9 April 1916 – 25 September 1985) was a German and British graphic designer who worked as Head of Typography and Design at Penguin Books from 1949 to 1976. During his Penguin years he played a crucial role in postwar British typography, and has been described as one of the most influential typographers of the last century.
