    1963. Gusmano Cesaretti, 19 years old, a passion for the ‘American dream’, a camera and a one-way ticket to New York. Thus was born the incredible story of ‘The Picture Man’, the man who, from the province of Lucca, without speaking English, landed in the United States, becoming perhaps the most authoritative and direct eye on American subcultures.

    First in Chicago, then in Los Angeles, Gusmano and his camera are one and the same, his eye documenting first-hand the urban subcultures of the time: metropolitan jazz, the beat generation, the East L.A. of the Chicanos, the Mexican mystical experiences. He is in the right place at the right time, a direct and reliable eyewitness, with his raw, instinctive, vibrant and authentic style of so-called street photography, contributing to the genesis of the Western collective imagination. He later worked, as director of photography and image consultant, alongside some of the most influential directors of late 20th century American cinema, such as Michael Mann, Tony Scott and Marc Forster.

    It is a life ‘on film’ that of Gusmano, traced in this book thanks to an interview conducted in 2018 by young photographer and creative director Stefano Lemon, who outlines his human experience and artistic career. 168 pages and 85 photographs, most of which have never been published, recount the stages of an extraordinary journey that began more than fifty years earlier, creating a sort of magical passing of the baton.

    Caleidoscopica takes us on a journey through the last ten years of the career of Olimpia Zagnoli, an internationally renowned illustrator whose sinuous and colourful images have quickly conquered the worlds of publishing, fashion and communication.     “Cast it” is a publication typeset in CAST characters. Issue 4 presents Fournier’s preface to Modéles de caracteres de l’imprimerie (1742) followed by Harry Carter’s English version (1930) commented by James Mosley (1995). The preface is by Sébastien Morlighem.

    In 1736, the French engraver and typefounder Fournier le jeune (1712-1768) began producing new typefaces in his foundry in Paris. Six years later, he published the type specimen book Modéles de caracteres including a “Notice to lovers of printing” that we are happy to republish. In this text, Fournier traces a history of typography by talking about his most famous colleagues who preceded him. He describes his aesthetic choices, explains his system of point measurement of typefaces and reasoning on the need to produce them in new bodies. He concludes by pledging to improve his typefaces and the quality of French printing.

    This is not the first time that Mattotti has felt the need to make an illustrated travelogue, he had already done so in 2014, collecting a series of drawings documenting his discovery of Vietnam in a precious travel book, later published by Louis Vuitton. On Patagonia, however, the artist does not want to make a full-fledged reportage, as he had done for the eastern country; what interests him about this place is only one aspect: its boundless and virgin nature, not its inhabitants and their stories that had so fascinated storytellers such as Bruce Chatwin and Louis Sepulveda. For Mattotti, Patagonia is first and foremost a place of the mind and that is why he strips it of colour to represent it, synthesising its forms, making it almost abstract to succeed in giving us back a sensation before an image, the sensation that every man feels when he finds himself in an extreme land, in a land at the end of the world.

    Edited by Melania Gazzotti, the book presents all the 24 black and white plates contained in the Nepalese paper notebook where Mattotti copied his travel notes, together with a selection of colour drawings made by the artist in a classic Moleskine® notebook while he was in Patagonia. Both notebooks are unpublished and were made between 2003 and 2004.

    “Cast it” is a periodical publication composed in CAST characters. Issue 3 offers the transcription of Der Schriftgiesser together with its English translation.

    Der Schriftgiesser (The typefounder) is a description of the casting of typefaces included in Werkstäte der heutigen Künste oder die neue Kunsthistorie, a kind of encyclopaedia of trades, originally published in Leipzig between 1761 and 1779. The author, Johann Samuel Halle (1727-1810), was a Prussian academic and official. His description of the type production process is probably the first detailed text on the subject written in German by an author who was neither a printer nor an entrepreneur in the industry.

    In 1922, the Wilhelm Woellmer type foundry in Berlin republished the text of ‘Der Schriftgiesser’ as a souvenir of the annual meeting of German type foundries. Thanks to Dan Reynolds, we now have for the first time an English translation of Halle’s text. The piece is accompanied by a preface that is also the only commentary on its contents ever published so far.

    Franco Matticchio’s women’s faces are serious and enigmatic, he draws them out of the blue on every piece of paper he comes across, from a letter envelope to the page of a book or the “The New Yorker”.

    They are the faces he encounters on the street, at the station, that he observes in his daily life and that accumulate and overlap in his personal visual imagination. Matticchio’s attention is captured by women of inconspicuous beauty, whose impassive expressions are united by a certain intensity and pride in their gaze. Over the years, the illustrator has continued to return to this inexhaustible subject, using every medium: pastels, watercolours, acrylics or even simply an Indian ink pen or pencil, always placing these figures against neutral backgrounds or in bare environments without temporal references, succeeding in subtraction to heighten the intimacy of the scenes and create suspended and rarefied atmospheres.

    Over time, Matticchio has amassed a veritable collection of female faces, almost never made on commission and mostly unpublished: a conspicuous body of drawings in which one can find the unmistakable style of the illustrator but at the same time find it hard to recognise that surreal and ironic vein that is one of his main distinguishing features. In fact, when Matticchio finds himself drawing a woman’s face, he only acts as a fascinated and discreet observer of the profound and mysterious complexity of the female soul.

    The book, edited by Melania Gazzotti, is accompanied by an unpublished text by Ugo Cornia.

    Katsumi Komagata’s ‘Book of Books’, an essential work by the author published in 2013 by Les Trois Ourses, now appears for the first time in a bilingual Italian and English version, in a revamped and updated edition. Komagata needs no introduction: it suffices to mention the two instances with which he revolutionised children’s publishing. Starting from an interweaving of his life with his young daughter Aï and the plastic experiments that characterised his training, Komagata manages to forge a new artistic sensibility through the extreme simplification of shapes and colours.

    In the 192 pages of this monograph, more than 100 illustrations offer a comprehensive view of his works. The book is aimed at all admirers of the figure of Komagata and what he represents for publishing, design and the graphic arts worldwide. These compositions were individually printed in response to the new common theme of ‘hope’, which followed the 2016 theme of ‘fear’ in 2017. Each year, the participants carry out their chosen theme in two stages: during the group art residency and, later, with each person’s individual work in their own studio. Opposite/complementary themes are chosen to create tension and find balance. The deluxe edition of the Letterpress Workers volume shows these two moments together.

    “Cast it” is a publication typeset in CAST fonts. Number 2 publishes, as a sample text, the first two chapters of The printer’s grammar, a manual for typesetters written and published by John Smith in London in 1755.

    As James Mosley notes in his preface, Smith often refers to Moxxon and his Mechanick exercises (1683-1684), but unlike most manuals of the time he does not rely on it. From several passages in The printer’s grammar (some of which can be found in these excerpts), it is evident that Smith had learnt his trade as a typographer in Germany and was also familiar with French and Dutch practices. In short, he was an entrepreneur and European citizen ante litteram.

    CAST is a digital type foundry that shares Smith’s entrepreneurial and cosmopolitan spirit by promoting international debate on typographic issues. In addition to “Cast it”, CAST publishes articles on the science, history and culture of type on its website.

    Cesare Leonardi. L’Architettura della Vita / The Architecture of Life narrates the eclectic and interdisciplinary character of Cesare Leonardi’s research. Busy in a continuous and passionate investigation, far from notoriety despite the fact that some of his works are found in the most important museums of the world and are published on international magazines, Cesare Leonardi is the example of a life dedicated to architecture and planning. The publication would not have been possible without the decisive contribution of the Cesare Leonardi Architect Archive, in particular thanks to the efforts of Andrea Cavani and Giulio Orsini, researchers at the Archive and curators of the catalog.

    The idea behind the Letterpress Workers project, the now customary international meeting of typographical designers held every year in Milan, is that graphic design should play an active role within society and thus also speak of the drives that run through it. In the 2016 edition, the concept of fear was addressed.

    The book, through a choral visual narrative, brings together the works resulting from this association and explores its socio-cultural implications, starting with the graphic design, freely inspired by the work of Dutch designer Willem Sandberg, whose human and professional example embodied the very spirit of this edition of the conference.

    Inspired by the late, great cartoonist William Steig and his famous book, The Lonely Ones (which combines Steig’s line-drawn characters with simple lines of dialogue with themselves), photographer Gus Powell has created his own ‘lonely ones’. Quiet yet evocative colour photographs of interiors and landscapes, inhabited by people, animals and inanimate characters.

    Each photograph is accompanied by an evocative text, which functions in the opposite way to a caption: each of the 40 images in the book is hidden by the page folded in on itself, on the back of which the sentence is printed. Thus each photograph is revealed one by one by opening the page. “Which way to the convention?” comments the photograph of a butterfly in mid-air.

    Lazy Dog publishes this new edition of the book in three languages, enriched in addition to English by translations into Italian and Japanese.

    Writing, letterforms and typefaces are part of Lazy Dog’s DNA, the name of the publishing house is there to suggest it. This is why we took up the invitation of the Cooperativa Anonima Servizi Tipografici to create “Cast it”, the annual publication that responds to two needs: to promote the history and culture of typeface together with foundry typefaces.

    “Cast it” issue 1 uses the entry ‘Foundry typeface’ from the Dictionary of Arts and Crafts as a sample text to showcase CAST typefaces. This 1769 text is – as James Clough notes in the preface – the first contribution on the subject ever published in Italian.
