Simone Azzoni

Simone Azzoni (Asolo 1972) graduated in modern literature and philosophy in 1996. He is an art critic and lectures History of Contemporary Art at IUSVE. He also teaches Critical Image Reading and History of Art at the Palladio Institute of Design in Verona. A teacher of literature at secondary school, he is interested in Net Art and New Media Art and Art marketing tips. He has curated numerous exhibitions in unconventional venues. He is a theatre critic for national magazines and newspapers. He is the author of seminars on Critical Reading of the Performing Arts at the University of Verona. He organises research and experimental theatre reviews with the Fondazione Teatro Nuovo of Verona and has been co-artistic director of Theatre Art Verona for three years. Among his recent publications, Frame – Videoart e dintorni was published by the publishing house Universitaria. He is the author of theatre texts that have been performed all over the world.

    Vida detenida brings together a series of photographs taken by Pedro Almodóvar in a domestic, intimate space, during moments of solitude and contemplation.

    Away from the film set, Almodóvar shoots to perform a deeply pop gesture: transforming ordinary objects — glasses, flowers, plates, utensils — into small secular altars, charged with memory and desire. These are not simple still lifes, but still life as in ‘arrested life’: each object preserves vitality, responds to light, and changes over time.

    These are photographs without post-production, where the focus lies in emotion rather than perfection. As Almodóvar himself writes: “What interests me is the ecstasy of the moment, staying alert and capturing the emotion of the instant.” This fragile, vibrant tension runs through every shot, where the beauty of the everyday becomes sacred, precarious, and never consoling.

    Amidst painterly reminiscences — like the work by Isabel Quintanilla that inspires the first shot — and literary echoes — such as the verses by Wordsworth quoted by Simone Azzoni in the afterword — Vida detenida is a poetic journey through a daily life transformed into a postmodern ritual, where objects lose their primary function and become emotional enigmas.

    A rare and precious book, where — as in his cinema — things reveal themselves by surprising us.

    Wim Wenders collects in this volume twenty black and white photographs, taken between 1964 and 1984. They are scattered shots, captured in Algeria, England, Indonesia, Iceland, Australia, the United States and Russia. The subjects are the most diverse: panoramas of naturalistic landscapes, glimpses of everyday village or metropolitan life, lyrical and melancholic views in which the human element fades or stands out strongly.

    Through them, the great director offers us, in an indirect and non-programmatic way, a way to approach his own style and to intuit, perhaps, the vision that animates his view of the world. In the introductory text, curator, and art critic Simone Azzoni stitches together the stories that animate these shots, accompanying a reflection that winds through the very early expressive phase of the great German master and expands to his entire career.

    Adding to the selection of images is an exclusive interview, also addressed to the director by Azzoni, through which the poetic convictions that motivate recurring choices in the director’s career are investigated, an overview of the expressive invariants of Wenders’ interdisciplinary artistic production.

    The hen’s gaze is oblique, transverse, direct, frontal and lateral, but only synthesis surrounds the object of understanding and meaning. The avant-gardes that characterised the last century, influencing and flowing like waves of meaning into the present, are reread by the gaze of musicians, photographers, actors, dancers, cooks and children, to become universal again in the scope and effects intended by their programmatic intentions.
